What is Family Support?

The quality of life for children with developmental disabilities, their families, and communities is enhanced by caring for the children within their own homes.  Children with disabilities benefit from growing up in their own families; families benefit by staying together; and communities benefit from the inclusion of people with diverse abilities.

Families are the greatest natural resource available to their children and the major providers of support, care, and training for their family members.

However, these families often experience exceptional physical and emotional challenges and high financial outlays from the complex task of supporting the needs of their family members with disabilities.  These expenses and challenges are often overwhelming in nature and exceed the families' resources.

Family Supports can help to address these needs and challenges and help to provide a quality of life comparable to other families in the community

Family Support services are available to all families who have children with disabilities.  These services include service coordination, information and referral, respite/child care, transportation, inservice training for families, and other individualized supports.

Financial assistance is available to families whose children are living at home, to help offset the cost for needed goods or services that are not available through other sources.  Examples of such items for which assistance may be available include day care, equipment and supplies, medications, travel expenses, home or vehicle modification, and education or training.

What is the cost to families for supports and services?

There is no charge to families for services and supports, and there are no income guidelines to obtain services.  At this point, eligibility is based on family needs, not income.

Who is eligible for these supports and services?

  1. Children with disabilities; birth through 21 years old.

  2. Families who have a child with a disability.

  3. Children with disabilities and their families.

What is the Family Support Program?

The purpose of the project is to expand the range of services and supports available to families who have children with disabilities, in order to enhance the ability of families to care for and nurture their children within the family home.

It is our belief that all children, regardless of their disability, belong with families and need enduring relationships with adults in a nurturing home environment.  Supports and services are available to families whose children are living at home and to those whose children are living out of the home, but return for home visits.

How is the Program Funded?

The primary funding for the Family Support project is provided through the South Dakota Division of Developmental Disabilities, Department of Human Services.
